Project

This Photo Archive and Database comprises the results of an on-going research project at The University of Edinburgh, Architectural Ornamentation in Late Antiquity: Classical Antecedents, Contemporary Aesthetics & Economics from the late 3rd–7th centuries AD. It addresses the ideology and economic pragmatism of newly produced architectural sculpture in the late antique cities of Asia Minor, Greece and the Balkans, the Italic Peninsula, North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant.

As an integral component of this project, this site provides open-access images and content online for publication, research, and classroom use (see Copyright). Its principal dataset focuses on late antique architectural orders. The database is built on a hierarchical structure beginning with artefacts, which are then situated within corresponding building assemblages, architectural sites, and geographic regions. All content is organized through standardized keyword metadata to facilitate search and context-based integration. Dropdown menus with single-select search field boxes permit users to filter content and diverse datasets within the database based on their desired criteria.
